About the Visiting Fellowships
Sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Visiting Fellowships program is designed for academics in the humanities and social sciences. This program is a cornerstone of the British Academy’s commitment to international cooperation and is designed to:
- Establish and enhance connections between global scholars and UK researchers.
- Create avenues for joint research initiatives in the humanities and social sciences.
- Provide opportunities for academic enrichment and professional development in the UK.
- Reinforce the UK’s research infrastructure in these critical disciplines.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Visiting Fellowships, candidates must:
- Hold a postdoctoral level qualification or possess equivalent research expertise.
- Be residing outside of the UK at the time of the application.
- Be employed on either a permanent or a fixed-term contract, with fixed-term contracts extending beyond the end of the fellowship period.
- Independent researchers are also encouraged to apply.
- Have already established contact with a prospective UK host institution prior to application.

Fellowship Terms and Financial Support
- Duration: Fellowships may last from three to six months.
- Funding Cap: Up to £40,000 is available per fellowship.
- Start Dates: Fellows may commence their projects anytime from March to August 2025.
